Semester fall semester 2008
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Computer technology provides people with many different ways of interacting. In this course we will explore computer-mediated communication in its various manifestations, such as email, chats, blogs, fora, YouTube, etc. and discuss the impact of the medium on the use of the English language. We will ask questions related to style, interactional patterns, Netiquette, language innovations, emoticons, and the influence of the technical restrictions (e.g., asynchronic versus synchronic types of media) on linguistic choices.
Learning objectives Students should gain theoretical knowledge on methodology and computer-mediated language, which they can then apply to their own research projects.
