21840-01 - Colloquium: Masculinities in 1970s British Culture 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2009
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Andrea Ochsner (andrea.ochsner@unibas.ch)
Content In this course, we will focus on various aspects of British culture in the 1970s with a strong emphasis on gender. These aspects include Film/TV, literature, music and material culture (advertisements, fashion and design).
Our aim to characterize the structure of feeling of the particularly unruly decade of the 1970s is grounded in a traditional British cultural studies-approach with a twist of contemporary continental theory. One of our primary concerns is to consider which cultural artefacts and cultural behaviours raised new challenges to the ways in which social issues were articulated through gender and cultural discourses.
We expect our students to have some knowledge of the field (basic tools of cultural and gender studies) and an interest in exploring a wide range of material in depth. We also expect active engagement with, and critical assessment, of the subject matter.
Learning objectives To familiarise students with the cultural topography of the 1970s in Britain; to improve the skills to study/analyse material relating to different genres and formats and to make students aware of how gender identity is discursively articulated and negotiated in cultural texts.
