21762-01 - Seminar: Recent SOUTH (ERN) African Fiction 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2009
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Therese Steffen (therese.steffen@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Fiction after 2000 is at stake in this survey seminar on recent South African texts and contexts. The transition years after the end of apartheid have brought forth a range of novels dealing with the tensions between hope and despair, the rural and the urban, tradition and modernity, with shifts from racial tensions to class trouble or, with the struggle of former exiles to come to terms with post-apartheid conditions. A special focus will be on the South African dynamics transforming the big cities Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town.
Bibliography Texts will include
- Ivan Vladislaviċ, "Propaganda by Monuments", "Willem Boshoff";
- Zakes Mda, "Ways of Dying";
- Zoë Wicomb, "Playing in the Light";
- Sello K. Duiker, "Thirteen Cents", "The Quiet Violence of Dreams";
- Nadine Gordimer, "Beethoven Was One-Sixteenth Black: And Other Stories";
- Johan van Wyk, "Man Bitch";
- Fred Khumalo, "Bitches’ Brew".

Our background text will be Rita Barnard’s "Apartheid and Beyond" (on the RS).
