19947-01 - Seminar: The Sociolinguistics of Narrative 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2009
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Danièle Klapproth Muazzin (daniele.klapproth@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The importance of narrative not only as an interactional resource and productive instrument of communication, but also as a indispensable tool for making sense of the world, has come to be recognised in a variety of disciplines. Not only do we use narratives to create coherence in our biographical experience, we also use stories to express and enact our sense of community and attachment to place. In this seminar we will examine narrative discourse within the dynamic context of human interaction. Adopting a sociolinguistic and discourse-analytical perspective, we will explore the structure, function and use of narrative, and we will engage critically with some of the most important models of narrative that have been put forward. Examining a range of narratives from various cultural contexts and genres (e.g. conversational narratives, news stories, refugees' stories, stories from the oral tradition, etc.), we will be particularly interested in how narrative practice intersects with the construction of social and cultural identities, self and other, belonging and exclusion.
Learning objectives Our overall aim will be to work towards a fuller understanding of narrative as a genre and of narrative practice as a vital component in the creation and negotiation of our social and cultural worlds.
Bibliography A reader will be made available.
