23260-01 - Practical course: Stretching Theory: visualizations of space and time in British culture 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2009
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The course has two main functions: firstly to introduce and explore, further to critically question theoretical texts in which space, time and visuality are thematized. Thus participants will be instructed in the basic terminology, characteristics and features of the field through reading a number of key critical texts. Secondly, we will apply and articulate theoretical aspects through an examination of both historical and social views of various media and formats, such as time-based media, spatial representations and texts, including film, television, video, fine art, novels and photography. One key thematic focus will be the notion of emergent practices and resistance.
Learning objectives • To familiarize students with key concepts in critical texts relating to visuality and theorizing of space and time.
• To focus critical attention on the analysis of representations of space and time in visual media.
• To expose and extend students' knowledge in the repertoire of British cultural artefacts in particular those that articulate resistance.
Bibliography A course reader will be made available.

Admission requirements Students should have an interest in developing their critical reading of theory and in how to relate notions of visuality to space and time in a cultural context. Students should already have completed one year of study.
