14287-01 - Seminar: Sustainability Assessment 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2010
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Paul Burger (paul.burger@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In respect of what criteria do we say that a society or a development is sustainable (or not sustainable)? How is it possible to operationalize intergenerational justice for measuring sustainability? Do we have some general valid criteria in sustainability assessment or is assessment a purely subjective matter?
These are some of the questions we will try to answer in this seminar. During the last ten years or so a huge amount of indicator systems for nations, regions and specific fields (including universities!) have been established. Contrary to the debate within economics, these indicator systems are always multifactorial. Among others, they are dependent on premises concerning the normative content of sustainability and concerning the societal system. As scientists we are interested in understanding quality requirements for intersubjectively reliable indicator systems taking into account explicitly or tacitly invested premises. Hence, students will first become acquainted with theoretical bricks and will then use them to analyse specific indicator systems.
Learning objectives Students
- know the foundational bricks for sustainability assessment
- know important indicator systems
- are able to critically analyse an indicator system
Bibliography A list will be handed out at the beginning of the seminar.
Comments The course will be teached in English. Some of the case studies require German language skills.
