24116-01 - Seminar: Space, Place, Location: representations of urbanized space in post-war British culture 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2010
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch)
Andrea Ochsner (andrea.ochsner@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The immediate period that followed WW II is usually associated with the dissolution of class boundaries and the notion of affluence. The texts discussed in the seminar critically reflect this assumption while creating alternative modes of interpretation. The seminar is geared towards an understanding of spatial relations (both literally and metaphorically) expressed in texts that are set in urban areas in the Britain of the 1950s/1960s. We will analyse cultural texts (novels, films, TV series) in which the broader notion of 'space' emerges as a structural principle to make sense of social antagonisms and their textual representation. A specific emphasis will be put on class and gender and the ways in which class positions and gender identities are being negotiated in terms of space, place and location.
Learning objectives To familiarise students with theoretical considerations of space with regard to post-war British culture and to improve the skills to study and analyse different types of texts that figure identities dependent on space and place.
