24053-01 - Seminar: Simon Armitage: Poet, Novelist, Translator, Etc. 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2010
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Andrew Shields (andrew.shields@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this course we will consider the work of contemporary British poet Simon Armitage. Given that he is not only a poet but a novelist, songwriter, and translator, we will consider his work in several genres, while concentrating on his work as a poet.
Learning objectives Close reading of literary texts; issues of genre (poetry and fiction; poetry and songwriting)
Bibliography As of this writing (November 2009), I have not made final choices about which works we will be considering by this prolific writer. I hope to have done so by mid-January 2010, and students interested in the course should contact me then. Those interested in beginning to read Armitage before then should start with his "Selected Poems" (Faber and Faber, 2001) and "The Universal Home Doctor" (Faber and Faber, 2004).
