24055-01 - Seminar: Ireland 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2010
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Ina Habermann (ina.habermann@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Ever since the early modern period, Ireland has been (constructed as) England's, or later Britain's 'Other', so that the study of English literature cannot be divorced from Irish colonial history and cultural heritage. This course will focus on literary explorations and negotiations of Irish identity in the twentieth century. We will look particularly at the aftermath of the Celtic Revival and literary responses to the Easter Rising and the civil war as well as the Troubles in the 1970s. Moreover, we are planning to offer a workshop on contemporary Irish drama.
