24063-01 - Lecture: Southasian Fiction and Postcolonial 'Identities': A Survey 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2010
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Therese Steffen (therese.steffen@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This lecture course offers a survey of the literary texts in English in their respective socio-historic contexts in Southasia/India.
From the times of the East India Company (1600-1857) to the British conquest of large parts of India in the 18th century, from Queen Victoria's becoming Empress of India in 1876, through the Ghandian Era to the year of Independence and Partition of India in 1948, the English language has emerged as a (contested) common denominator or 'lingua franca' in the Indian subcontinent. With roughly 10% of the population India has the largest English-speaking population of the world by 2010 and has produced an impressive range of literary texts over more than two hundred years. From Thomas Babington McCauley's "Minute on Indian Education" (1835) to Vikas Swarup's "The Slumdog Millionaire" (2008) this course will familiarize students with major debates and books in English from India.
Bibliography A reader will be available at "dings" in due time.
Comments This lecture course offers also an introduction to my seminar on "Southasian/Indian Writings and Postcolonial Identities" in the Fall 2010.
