Lecturers Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The proseminar for first semester SLA students will provide an overview of the basic structural properties of the English language (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax) and a very brief view of semantics and pragmatics. The topics addressed include: what are the characteristics of the sound system? How can the sounds be categorized in a linguistic fashion? How can new words be formed, and how are they inflected? What makes English sentence structure special? How does language make sense? How can language be used? The Proseminar combines theoretical input from the instructor with discussion of these principles and practical application to material in exercises.
Learning objectives Students will be familiarized with basic linguistic concepts and methodology. Students will gain practical experience in applying these concepts to the analysis of English utterances at several levels of representation.
