Content | This is an introductory course for students to be exposed to the fundamentals of human disease and genetics. This course will allow students to integrate recent developments into their own area of clinical practice or interest. The course is designed to be a short, but intensive two-week study on genetics. There will be classes on three days, and the other days can be dedicated to readings and writing the final paper. Topical outline by three class days: Day One 1. Introduction to course 2. Review requirements for paper to be due the end of week two. Topic to be approved on day two by Dr. Wesmiller. 3. Review of basic cell biology, central dogma of genetics and structure and function of genes and chromosomes. Including chromosomal abnormalities. Objective 1 and 2 4. Inheritance patterns and the importance of a 3-generation pedigree in Nursing Practice Objective 3 and 4 Day Two 1. Detection and Genetic variation Objective 5 2. Epigenetics and Imprinted diseases Objective 5 and 6 3. Cancer Genetics Objective 6 Day Three 1. Multifactorial Diseases (focus on cardiac disease and diabetes) Objective 5 2. Pharmacogenomics and Precision Health Objective 7 3. Genetic testing across the lifespan Objective 7 and 8 4. Gene Editing, Crispr-Cas9 Objective 9 Each class day will include 5 hours of lecture/activities. There will be required readings before each class. Case-studies will be discussed, and students will be encouraged to engage in discussion. |
Learning objectives | Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Recognize the importance of understanding that all genetic diseases involve defects at the level of the cell. 2. Describe chromosomal abnormalities 3. Conceptualize differences between inheritance patterns 4. Incorporate principles of genetic variability and inheritance into their patient assessments 5. Explain the methods of detection, measurement and identification of genetic variation for both single gene disorders and multifactorial diseases in all ages. 6. Recognize the growing field of Immunogenetics, and the treatment of patients with cancer. 7. Be able to discuss the importance of precision medicine and how it should have an impact on the role of the Advanced Practice Nurse 8. Describe the social/ethical issues involving genetics and genomics today, especially gene editing. 9. Examine the role of the family in the diagnosis and treatment of genetic disorders, and when genetic counseling is needed. |
