Content Nowadays collecting large datasets (“Big data”) is not only feasible but starts to become the standard rather than the exception, mainly due to technological advances. This trend can also be seen in psychological research. Whenever data sets become large or are based on a complex structure, we need special techniques and skills to appropriately handle them. This seminar aims at giving a general overview about advantages and pitfalls in large and complex data sets. Furthermore, we will introduce explicit examples of such datasets, and discuss how to handle, analyze and interpret big data in general.
Learning objectives The participants should develop a basic understanding of the concept of big data, based on distinct examples such as fMRI or DNA data, and how this can be linked to psychological research.
Bibliography Will be announced in the seminar.
