48846-01 - Lecture: The principle of sequentiality: from grammar to action 2 CP

Semester fall semester 2017
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Lorenza Mondada (lorenza.mondada@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This Vorlesung deals with a fundamental principle – sequentiality - governing what Saussure has called the linearity of the signifiant, others have called the syntactical and topical progression of the text and interactional linguistics has called the emergent temporality of the talk. Sequentiality is a principle that shapes different levels of organization – from phonetics to syntax, from syntax to complex monological units and from discourse to interaction. It both accounts for how there is a prospective orientation in the production and interpretation of text and talk, and how, within this progressivity, there is also a retrospective orientation to what has been said before. The Vorlesung explores how these prospective and retrospective relations govern utterances, turns, complex multi-unit turns and sequences, that is, how they are recognizable for us as analysts and how they are exploited by speakers and hearers. The Vorlesung is based on a rich array of examples illustrating these multifaceted aspects of sequentiality; it provides both for theoretical discussions (bibliographical references will be available on Adam), for tools of analysis and for exercises applying them.
