35023-01 - Lecture: Comparative Typology of English and German 2 CP

Semester fall semester 2017
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Christian Mair (christian.mair@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Starting with phonetics / phonology and proceeding to grammar and the lexicon, this lecture aims to provide a comprehensive contrastive survey of the structure of present-day English and German. In addition, we will look at selected aspects of language in use, such as, for example, politeness norms and translation. On the theoretical plane, the systematic comparison of English and German is intended as a first step in the exploration of linguistic typology, i.e. the study of universals and variability in human languages. On a more practical level, I hope to demonstrate that contrastive analyses of languages can help you as advanced learners to better assess and monitor your own performance in the foreign language.
