50395-01 - Seminar: Environment and Development in Global Politics 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2018
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Florian Weiler (florian.weiler@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The focus of this seminar is the interaction between development on the one hand, and environmental issues on the other. In the first part of the seminar, we are going to to discuss topics related to development, such as what constitutes development, how it can be measured, and which determinants foster (or hinder) the economic development of countries. In the second part of the course we then focus on key environmental issues, and how they are related to development. We are going to discuss e.g. development and the impact on the climate, waste production and waste disposal, biodiversity, and water. In this part, we are also going to discuss things like the tragedy of the commons (and what commons are in the first place), the environmental Kuznetz curve, as well as sustainability and resilience. In the last part of the course we then look into climate finance and climate aid, i.e. how the original idea of development assistance plays out and is connected to the idea of sustainable development.
Learning objectives An the end of the seminar students should
- Gain an understanding of how environmental issues are connected to (economic) development
- Know the major topic discussed in academia currently in the field, and the methods used to answer the research questions
- Be able to identify potentially interesting areas for their own research (for seminar papers)
- Develop their own seminar paper
