Content Can political and socio-critical art “survive”?, Martha Rosler asked famously. The lecture series The Art of Intervention takes this question as its cue to focus on art and culture’s critical and visionary contributions to current debates on the multiple crises of neoliberal global capitalism, migration, and reignited nationalisms. In light of increasing assaults and restrictions on critique, and the deriding of politically minded arts, humanities and social sciences as superfluous ideology, we will explore the radical impact and potentiality of art and culture in conjunction with critical thought and political mobilization.
On the occasion of the exhibition by Martha Rosler and Hito Steyerl at the Kunstmuseum Basel, this lecture series will explore the academic and artistic synergies that emanate from interventions that are intensely critical and fun, politically creative and creatively political, espousing queer-feminist, postcolonial and intersectional perspectives. This involves rethinking the notions of artistic intervention and critique and an analysis of prevailing discourses on identity, migration, integration and globalization. We theorize interventions, endorsed or unendorsed, authorized or illicit, as performative acts of critique, politics, and activism with a potential to subvert the status quo. Artistic interventions enable new encounters and can lead to (unlikely) coalitions in the struggle for justice. Yet interventions can also incite censorship and other coercive measures. Our lecture series aims to explore the myriad forms of the art of intervention while setting out to shed light on the potentiality of art as intervention.
The lecture series is part of the event series The Art of Intervention. The public lectures by international experts will be accompanied by sessions that offer the opportunity for text discussion of introductory and further reading.
