52109-01 - Seminar: The Digital Turn: Anthropologial Perspectives 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2018
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers David Bozzini (david.bozzini@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content During the last three decades, digital technologies have increasingly been pervading human activities worldwide. This seminar explores the impact this digital shift is having on practices, institutions and social organizations in Western societies. To what extent has the digital turn brought social change? What digital culture(s) denotes in the current anthropological/sociological literature and how can we delineate this notion? We aim to deliberate over these general questions throughout the exploration of several domains of anthropological inquiry: labour, law, politics, art and personal relationships. After a few introductory reading sessions, each of the aforementioned domains will be discussed for a period of two weeks.
Students will be responsible to explore a theme and present their conclusions in the classroom. They will have the opportunity to research and discuss questions such as: What is digital labour? How Free and Open Source Software initiatives have reinvented labour relationships and collaborations? How copyrights and privacy are reconsidered in the digital era? How digital initiatives interact with national politics? How digital media impacts the organization of social movements? How the digital has permeated the artistic field? Are there new digital social relationships and how can we define new digital patterns and strategies in connection with offline/face-to-face interactions?
Learning objectives Social and cultural change is examined through the exploration of the digital turn and its alleged impact on human organizations and practices.
Bibliography A reference list will be distributed at the beginning of the semester and the core texts will be online on ADAM. A couple of documentaries will be shown and discussed in the classroom during the semester.
