52091-01 - Research seminar: English in contact: Pidgins and creoles 4 CP

Semester fall semester 2018
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Jakob Leimgruber (jakob.leimgruber@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This research seminar considers the English language in contact situations that have resulted in the emergence of new codes, known as pidgins and creoles. The colonial period and its reliance on the slave trade are particularly relevant to this topic. We will see how contact between speakers of different languages has resulted in new codes that are lexically, grammatically, and phonologically distinct from their 'parent' languages. The study of pidgins and creoles as also led to major advances in linguistic theory, which we will focus on in more detail. After a few introductory sessions, students will be expected to work on dedicated projects of their own, and to gradually present their evolving methodology and results in class.
Learning objectives Students will develop an understanding of the global nature of the English language and of the processes behind the formation of contact languages. They will be taught to engage critically with the literature and the theoretical directions influenced by the study of pidgins and creoles. Practical descriptive research skills and fieldwork methods will be acquired and applied to actual data.
Bibliography A detailed reading list, as well as selected readings, will be made available on ADAM.
