Content | In this course, students will acquire a basic understanding of the nature of the English language as a linguistic system. We will first study the English sound system (phonetics and phonology). In that context we will focus on the origin and use of vowels, diphthongs and consonants. Then we will go on to word and sentence stress and intonation and learn to use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Further, we will explore the nature and structure of English words (morphology) and how words combine to form longer units such as clauses, phrases and sentences (syntax). |
Learning objectives | To gain a basic understanding of English phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax. |
