53202-01 - Practical course: African perspectives on global history 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2018
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Benjamin Brühwiler (benjamin.bruehwiler@unibas.ch)
Cassandra Thiesen-Mark (cassandra.mark@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content For much too long, many academic historians denied that Africa had a history prior to colonization and the arrival of Europeans. In response, African historians have been compelled to combat this fallacy in their research. Yet, in “writing Africa into history”, certain political and scholarly trends have emerged, which often ended up obscuring the actual lived experiences of Africans on the continent during the precolonial era and thereafter. This course will analyze valorous attempts of African scholarship (from social, economic, cultural and political perspectives), as well as their shortcomings. In the bi-weekly writing workshop (involving minilessons, sharing, peer critique and conferring, and an editing session) students will also get the opportunity to sharpen their own tools.

English is the language of instruction in this course. Most of the readings are in English as well. Still, students are welcome to participate in discussions in German. Writing may be done in German; though the course is recommended for those seeking to improve their English writing skills.
