53255-01 - Practical course: An Introduction to the Writing of African History 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2018
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Henri-Michel Yéré (h.yere@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this class I would like to (re)visit the debates that have surrounded the establishment of African history as a discipline, as well as some of the specific methods that have enriched historical research in general out of the practice of recovering Africa's multiple pasts. We will engage our themes through the discovery of case-studies such as the history of the West African Empires (Ghana, Mali, Songhai, notably), as well as more recent debates surrounding the history of decolonisation and African nationalism.
