47112-01 - Lecture: Ethics on Site 1 CP

Content Molecular Systems Engineering (MSE) is catalysing a paradigm shift in both engineering and life sciences. While the field is still in its infancy the perspectives of MSE in revolutionising technology is promising and nevertheless poses significant ethical and societal challenges. This seminar will investigate the moral philosophical challenges raised by MSE research.
Learning objectives This seminar will
1) raise the students’ awareness of the ethical dimension of their research work (scientific integrity)
2) target the fields of ethical conflicts within and outside the students’ research and scientific surroundings
3) sharpen the student’s awareness about ethical aspects of the implementation of research (breaking new grounds/raising new dilemmas)
4) lay grounds for a catalogue of this NCCR’s ethical guidelines (COMSEE)
Bibliography Literature will be provided during the seminar and via ADAM workspace.
Comments This is a compulsory lecture for PhD studensts of the NCCR-MSE project.

Regular active participation.
Students will be expected to
- give a 15 minute oral presentation about the ethical implications of their research
- write a 4 pages final paper, coversheet excluded. (hand in deadline: 30 June 2018)
