53329-01 - Seminar: Data-processing pipelines in Life Science 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2019
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Virginie Freytag (virginie.freytag@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Thomas Schlitt (thomas.schlitt@unibas.ch)
Content Collecting large and complex datasets, like genetics or MRI-data, offers the chance to gain new insight in life science. However, this also comes along with challenges regarding data management and data analysis, especially when analyses are planned to be done across several large datasets. To understand scientific data management and data analysis, one has to combine knowledge from a variety of disciplines like computer science, scientific databases and applied statistics in combination with the biological background of each single dataset. In this seminar, we will focus on the technical and statistical aspects of developing scientific data-processing pipelines. We will further discuss real-life scientific examples from molecular and cognitive neuroscience.
Learning objectives The participants should develop a general understanding of data-processing pipelines in Life Science. They should be able to apply this knowledge in their daily work as PhD students.
