Content Research data management concerns the organisation of data, from its entry to the research cycle through to the dissemination and archiving of valuable results. Research data management can be a complex issue, but done correctly from the start, it can save a lot of time and hassle at the time the data should be analysed for a publication or writing up your thesis.

In this course we will discuss and illustrate with practical examples ways to create, organise, share, and look after your research data. The focus will be on quantitative research data. We will contextualise the topics with requirements of funding bodies regarding the driving principle of data as a public good and ethical issues such as data protection and confidentiality.

Learning objectives The basis of solid scientific work is accurate, reliable and accessible research data. Students will learn the essentials of managing research data starting from data collection to the stages of analysis, dissemination and archiving.
Comments Methods: Lectures and practicals (on laptop and tablets - tablets provided by Swiss TPH; own tablets may also be used).

Admission requirements A laptop with Stata installed is required for this course and a basic working knowledge of Stata is an advantage. As students will work mostly in groups, one laptop with Stata may be shared between two students, if necessary.
Students are expected to complete and submit the assignments in time to be awarded the credit points.
