Content | This seminar explores the ways in which Christian theologians and humanists understood Judaism and Islam in the late medieval and Renaissance Europe. The physical and spiritual coexistence of three religions led to creative intellectual confrontation which often resulted in attempts to convert non-Christians either by peaceful strategies or by force. Starting from the representation of non-Christians in visual sources (world maps, illuminated manuscripts, statues), the seminar will tackle inter-faith debates on religious law, revelation, afterlife, prophethood, Trinity, the Scriptures and the Qur’an by examining a series of Christian writings (polemics, travel books, literary dialogues, translations) from 12th to early 16th century. |
