Content | Emotion is both experienced and expressed. In this seminar, we set aside the issue of phenomenal sensations, feelings, and mental states, and instead explore the ways in which emotion is expressed in the context of actual everyday activities. The social organization of emotion will be examined through lectures and hands-on analyses of recordings and transcripts of actual social interactions. The seminar first reviews the study of emotion in contemporary affective science (psychological, biological, and neurocognitive approaches) before more extensively looking at emotion from a social-interactional perspective. Over the course of the seminar, students will engage questions such as: what is the relationship of affect and emotion to social action? how are affective displays built up in interaction? through what modalities? how do participants use emotion terms and descriptions? how do displays of emotion figure into sequences of social action? |
Comments | Conversation Analysis will be used throughout the course. While no familiarity is assumed, students with some experience in that method will have an advantage. |
