53964-01 - Lecture: Multilingualism in Context and in Action 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2019
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Lorenza Mondada (lorenza.mondada@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Today, monolingual situations and monolingual speakers are becoming rather the exception : our world is characterized by language contact, multilingual speakers, language hybrids, and intercultural exchanges. The course deals with multilingualism by focusing on diverse types of social encounters in which people speak more than one language and on diverse type of linguistic configurations. Among the phenomena discussed, the course favors a) code-switching as a grammatically constrained practice and as a communicatively functional practice, b) language mixing, mixed languages and other hybrids as configurations in which participants engage in a linguistic bricolage more or less improvised or more or less conventionalized, c) lingua franca phenomena in which speakers choose one common language (not always English) to be able to communicate together. The course aims at discussing the concepts used in the literature in linguistics, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and interactional linguistics, as well as at presenting methodologies to deal with empirical cases of recorded bilingual conversations.
