19659-01 - Seminar: Case Studies in Drug Sciences 1 CP

Semester fall semester 2019
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Stephan Krähenbühl (stephan.kraehenbuehl@unibas.ch)
Matthias Emanuel Liechti (matthias.liechti@unibas.ch)
Alex Odermatt (alex.odermatt@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content On the basis of selected cases of disease- or toxicity-phenotypes as a consequence of medical treatment, the cause and mechanisms responsible for the clinical picture will be discussed.

Week 1: Introduction to Case Seminars in Toxicolgy (A. Odermatt)
Week 2: Presentation of Cases by students in the Seminar (A. Odermatt)
Week 3: Self-Study and work in small groups

Week 5: Self-study and work in small groups
Week 6: Presentation of Cases by students in the Seminar (S. Krähenbühl)
Learning objectives The students are able to describe examples of toxic effects as a consequence of drug therapy. They know the links between clinical phenotype and molecular mode of action. They know how to read the scientific literature critically and how to derive questions that lead to explanations for the described observations. In the team, they can tackle problems systematically and compile possible solutions.
Bibliography Case reports and overview articles from the scientific literature.
