Semester | fall semester 2019 |
Course frequency | Every fall sem. |
Lecturers | Ellen C. Obermann (ellen.obermann@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | This series of lectures will give a systematic overview of cancer in humans. The first part of the course will be introducing and discussing general aspects of neoplastic diseases – definition, epidemiology, prevention, detection, carcinogens, and hereditary tumour syndromes. The second part of the course will focus on the most important tumour entities such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and colon cancer. Each lecture will be dedicated to a specific tumour entity. These lectures will discuss the unique characteristics of the disease on the one hand, while on the other hand, a unique molecular aspect with its relevance for detection, prevention or treatment of this tumour entity will be highlighted. In addition, participants will learn basics about the clinical side of cancer (e.g. cancer screening programs worldwide and in Switzerland, radiotherapeutics, types of chemotherapy and tumour surgery). This course will therefore cover both general clinical aspects and cutting edge novel aspects which are relevant for the understanding of neoplastic disease in humans. |
Learning objectives | Participants will gain knowledge in overall aspects of malignant neoplasms in humans. Basic knowledge on the clinical aspects of cancer will be gained, while the characteristic biological/molecular features of the most common types of cancer and their impact on prevention/diagnostics/treatment will be conveyed. |
Bibliography | Relevant literature will be sent to the participants by email prior to the lecture series. Therefore, participants are required to register until 13.10.2019 by email to ellen.obermann@unibas.ch. |
Comments | Participants are asked to bring a laptop/tablet. Takes place on the following 3 days from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.: November 18, 2019 November 26, 2019 December 02, 2019 |

Admission requirements | An interest in all aspects of cancer in humans – i.e. both the biological/molecular side as well as general topics such as epidemiology, prevention, treatment is required. Participants will have to participate actively during the course (group discussions, analysis of literature etc.). Participants are asked to bring a laptop/tablet. Participants are requested to register their attendance until 13.10.2019 by email to ellen.obermann@unibas.ch. |
