55009-01 - Seminar: A Critical Reflection of Corruption and Sustainable Development 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2019
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Lucy Koechlin (lucy.koechlin@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Corruption has long been recognised as an insidious practice that underpins marginalisation, exclusion, and disempowerment. For the last few decade, national and international initiatives have been addressing corruption in efforts to foster more inclusive and equitable development. But how does corruption relate to sustainable development, in particular the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? These are currently the most important framework guiding national and global development initiatives. The SDGs comprise 17 goals aimed at achieving economic, social and environmental sustainability by 2030 (hence the name of the UN's Agenda 2030, laying out the key principles and goals). Importantly, these are global goals, addressing states, companies, organisations and citizens across the globe.
In this seminar, we shall unpack the relevance of corruption on sustainable development. In the first half of the semester, we shall be looking at the interlinkages between sustainability and corruption; as well as digging into the architecture of the SDGs to see whether and how corruption and its negative effects on sustainability are indeed being addressed meaningfully within this framework. In the second half of the semester, we will be discussing opportunities and difficulties with practitioners from key organisations.
Learning objectives - A critical understanding of the relationship between corruption and sustainability
