11989-01 - Lecture: Biology of the Algae 1 CP

Semester fall semester 2019
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Haroun Frick (haroun.frick@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In many classic textbooks of botany, algae are considered as «lower plants» and get little attention. However, not only did they evolve some of the most extraordinary and beautiful forms of life, such as Volvox globator. As primary producers, they are the basis of all the biodiversity seen in the oceans, from krill to whales, and they may contribute more than 50% to global photosynthesis - a central issue in the current debate on global change. This lecture provides an overview on the diversity of algae, including their life cycles, and summarizes their role in marine and fresh water ecology, biogeochemistry and environmental sciences.
