55084-01 - Seminar: Hellenistic Judaism 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2019
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Julia Rhyder (julia.rhyder@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This subject explores the Hellenistic period (fourth–first centuries BCE) and its significance for the history of ancient Judaism. Students interested in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament will gain a better understanding of what is sometimes – erroneously – called the “intertestamental” period. As this course will show, the Hellenistic era was far from an “in between” stage between the writing of the Old and New Testaments. It was a time of creative and continuous cultural and religious production that proved critical to the emergence of both Jewish and Christian traditions.

Students who take this course will learn about the various texts that were composed in the Hellenistic period and the growing significance of the Greek language for Judean literature at this time. Particular attention will be paid to the new religious practices that emerged during the Hellenistic period, or which grew in importance during this era, including Torah observance, dietary taboos, and the celebration of new festivals, such as Hanukkah. Key themes such as messianism, martyrdom, diaspora life, and sectarianism will also be explored. The course will also introduce students to various models for interpreting the relationship between Judaism and Hellenism, with special focus on alternatives to the ‘acceptance/rejection’ dichotomy for reconstructing the impact of Hellenistic culture and traditions on emerging Judaism.
Learning objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should demonstrate:
- basic knowledge of the political structures of the Hellenistic period and the place of Judea and Judeans within those structures.
- understanding of a variety of Judean texts and traditions written in the Hellenistic period, as well as new cultural and religious practices and ideas that emerged at this time.
