25743-01 - Practical course: Interdisciplinary Research in Epidemiology and Infection Biology 1 CP (CANCELLED)

Semester fall semester 2019
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Jennifer Keiser (jennifer.keiser@unibas.ch)
Jürg Utzinger (juerg.utzinger@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The lecture provides a unique platform to discuss contemporary research topics in the biology of infection and epidemiology. The students can chose topics of their direct interest (e.g. recently published papers) and they have the possibility of presenting work from their own MSc or PhD studies. The first two lectures will be utilized to jointly develop the programme and to familiarize students to interdisciplinary research. In the remainder of the lectures, one or two students will give short presentations (20 min), followed by discussions. These presentations will be chaired by one or two students.
Learning objectives To understand key principles and the potential of an iterative process between laboratory- and field-based research; to think in multidisciplinary terms, which will facilitate building bridges between fundamental and applied sciences; to be capable of analysing problems of research and control of infectious diseases with the perspective of a laboratory scientist and with a public health perspective; to elucidate how basic research results can be translated into clinical development and public health gains; to critically analyse peer-reviewed articles and actively discuss implications for further research and control of infectious and chronic diseases and other public health issues.
