Lecturers Pascal Gantenbein (pascal.gantenbein@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Students need to analyze specific corporate situations in a structured way, identify business problems from different management perspectives, come up with their own assessment and ideas, and provide their individual solution and defend it. Typical business situations covered in this class comprise challenges related to strategy and financing, corporate governance, mergers and acqusitions, succession planning as well as restructurings and leveraged buyouts. A special focus is on the financing of business ventures and on managing the issues that start-ups are facing in the different stages of their early years. For these tasks, participants need to apply the economic concepts and management theories as well as the instruments and tools learnt in other classes to real business situations.
Learning objectives Participants will learn how to analyze, present, and discuss real business cases.
Bibliography The cases which are primarily obtained from Harvard Business School (HBS) are provided in class. For preparation, the following textbook is recommended: Robert F. Bruner, Kenneth M. Eades, Michael H. Schill: Case Studies in Finance, 7th edition, McGraw-Hill, 2013.
