55625-01 - Seminar: Translation, Language Learning, and Forensics: Applied Linguistics of English 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2019
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Daria Dayter (daria.dayter@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Applied Linguistics focuses on research into language with relevance to real-world issues. It subsumes a large variety of subfields, of which in this course we will look at three. Students of English linguistics will learn how to apply linguistic theories to actual data, and explore how linguists can contribute to solving practical tasks. We will deal with the contribution of linguistic theory to translation and interpreting (How can we educate translators better? How do we evaluate translations? How can we help develop automatic translation systems?); to language acquisition (How can we improve language teaching, backed by a rigorous study of language?); and forensic linguistics (How can language experts contribute to investigating crimes? What is linguistic evidence and is it admissible in court? What is authorship analysis, forensic discourse analysis, legal and forensic genres?)
Learning objectives At the end of this course, students should (1) know the scope of applied linguistics, (2) be familiar with the core research in translation, language learning, and forensic linguistics in English, and (3) be aware of the methodological concerns involved. They should also acquire practical skills in handling language data for an applied case in one of the three subfields.
Bibliography Texts will be made available on ADAM.
Comments Please note: the first session of the class on September 16, 10:15 will take place!
