Content This course will explore ethical issues of informal caregiving. Informal caregivers, that is, family and friends, provide a major part of care for patients in need of support. Not only do informal caregivers look after patient's physical and psychological needs, they also play a key role in decision-making at the end-of-life. With a high burden of care that they experience, informal caregivers might be in need of support themselves. Informal caregiving continues after the death of the loved one. Often, bereavement is an overlooked phase in the caregiving trajectory. This course discusses a broad range of ethical questions from the perspective of informal caregivers, such as how to best support caregivers in critical situations, what is the role of informal caregivers in advanced care planning, or what role the family plays in organ donation after death of their loved ones.
Comments Suitable for law, medical and nursing students.
