19664-01 - Seminar: Evaluation of compound properties 1 CP

Semester spring semester 2020
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Matthias Hamburger (matthias.hamburger@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The seminar will address the evaluation of physico-chemical, pharmacological/toxicological and biopharmaceutical properties of drugs, with a series of case studies. Case studies are on industrial discovery and development projects where the novel drug substance is in clinical development. Students will work in teams of 2 on a specific case. The individual projects, and specific questions to be addressed by the teams will be briefly presented by the lecturer at the start of the seminar. Students then select their individual projects. As a starting point groups will receive selected literature for their case study, and a catalogue of key questions to be addressed. The teams will address these questions, and discuss the specific case within the wider context, eg. possible industrial competitor projects addressing the same drug target.
Learning objectives Participants know and understand the parameters which are important for the pharmaceutical and pharmacological/toxicological profiling of a compound. They are able to evaluate the suitability of a molecule as drug substance. They are able to evaluate the outcomes of a specific drug development program against the background of current knowledge. Students are able to summarize their findings in a concise written and oral form.
Bibliography Key literature on each case study, and a catalogue of questions to be addressed, will be prepared and handed out by the lecturer. As general reference, the following book can be consulted: Molecular Drug Properties. Measurement and Prediction. R. Mannhold, H. Kubinyi, G. Folkers, Wiley-VCH 2007
Comments The seminar will be in English. The written report and oral presentation will be in English.
Film and sound recordings during the course are strictly forbidden (recorders may be confiscated).
