56524-01 - Proseminar: Anthropology of the Body 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2019
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Anna Christen (anna.christen@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This class zooms in on “the body” as a central category of being human and, thus, of anthropological study.

We will consider the body as a culturally and historically contingent category, a material locus of practice, and a mediator of knowledge. How does our social world – literally and conceptually – shape our bodies? What is “body” in relation to “mind”? How do anthropologists position themselves and others in a scientific discourse that is at least partially dependent on knowledge production through bodily participation? We will address these and other questions through close readings and discussions of a selection of seminal texts. Focusing on key concepts and analytical frameworks in both classic and contemporary anthropological literature on the body, we will critically examine dominant and challenging epistemological positions on bodily practice and knowledge. Core aim of this class is to help us re-think what it is we are doing when we engage in anthropological, bodily inquiry.

You will need no prior knowledge of anthropology of the body, but merely willingness to carefully read, think about, and discuss the texts.
