Semester | spring semester 2020 |
Course frequency | Every spring sem. |
Lecturers | Mihaela Zavolan (mihaela.zavolan@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | This course will introduce students to fundamental problems in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology such as: - Evolution: Mathematical models for the evolution of DNA sequences. - Alignment and Phylogeny reconstruction: inferring evolutionary relationships between sequences. - Functional annotation: Finding genes and regulatory sequences in fully sequenced genomes. - Families of coding sequences: Hidden Markov models of protein domains - Gene expression networks: Inferring regulatory factors driving gene expression. Students should have a good understanding of calculus, linear algebra, combinatorics and algorithms and should be familiar with concepts of molecular biology. |
Learning objectives | Students learn about the basic problem domain of bioinformatics as well as a wide range of algorithms for sequence analysis. They will learn about the commonly used languages of bioinformatics (mostly Python) and will implement basic bioinformatics algorithms. |

Admission requirements | First year courses must be accomplished. Mathematical background is needed in calculus, linear algrebra, diffential equations. Knowledge about discrete mathematics, stochastic processes and fundamental computer science algorithms is a plus. Basic programming skills and basic understanding in physics, chemistry and molecular biology (cells, DNA, RNA, proteins, etc.) is necessary. |
