39575-01 - Lecture: Biology of Orchids 1 CP

Content This course offers an introduction to the characteristic morphological and reproductive traits of the largest angiosperm plant Family, the Orchidaceae. The lectures also include ecological and evolutionary aspects, with a discussion on pollination mechanisms, mimicry and speciation. Furthermore, students learn how to use a botanical key to identify Swiss orchid species.

Lectures will be combined with practicals making use of the living orchid collection of the
Basel University Botanical Garden. Moreover, during a half-day field trip to two dry
meadows closeby, some important regional orchid species will be visited to discuss
conservational aspects.
