55015-01 - Seminar: Scientific Writing and Science Communication 6 CP

Content Students will learn how to write effective papers in their field. Students will work on regular writing tasks and receive input from both the lecturer and from peers in class as well. This is a hands-on course, so it is important to have a laptop computer all the time for classroom writing tasks.
Learning objectives Students will learn how to write about their research in effective ways for specific purposes.
Bibliography Some PDFs will be provided by the lecturer. We will also use Writing Science in Plain English by Anne Greene (University of Chicago Press, 2013). For students who did not take CS 304: Scientific Writing at the University of Basel, then Writing for Computer Science by Justin Zobel (Springer, 2014, 3rd edition) is highly recommended reading as well.
Comments All lectures, readings, classes, and tasks are in English. Students are expected to already have B2 level English or above to get the most out of the course.

 

Admission requirements Only PhD students in the University of Basel Data Analytics PhD Program.
Course application This scientific writing course is open to PhD students in the Data Analytics PhD Program of the University of Basel.

Assessment details The final result is based on the final paper students write during the semester. The final paper can either be a review paper or a paper on original research results.
