56563-01 - Theory seminar: Scientific Writing 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2020
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Laura Fontanesi (laura.fontanesi@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Scientific writing is about delivering knowledge clearly and concisely. It is also about engaging the readers’ attention and guiding them through your work with the help of a valid logical structure. This is why writing style is extremely important. Like other types of crafts, writing style can be trained and improved. And there are a few general rules that can boost the readability of a text. Maybe someone told you already to avoid long and passive sentences, for example. In this seminar, we will practice writing style through weekly, in-class assignments and exercises. The goal is to provide students with tools that will help writing and revising master theses or scientific papers.
Learning objectives In this seminar, students will learn how to write scientific reports. The focus of the course is writing style, with the goal of improving clarity in scientific reports.
