14630-01 - Lecture with practical courses: Biological and Integrated Pest Management 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2020
Course frequency Every 2nd spring sem
Lecturers Ralf Peveling (ralf.peveling@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Biological control – or biocontrol – and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) have long been considered as environmentally sound yet insufficiently effective alternatives to chemical control. Nowadays, these pest control options have not only emerged from former niche markets but have become key components of organic and integrated farming systems. The present course reviews the history of biocontrol and IPM. Starting with examples of classical biocontrol (i.e., control of exotic pests by introducing natural antagonists), the course gives an overview of successes and failures of biocontrol and IPM and presents modern approaches both in theory and practice. The course will particularly address African and Central Asian pest management problems and solutions, as well as implications for regional and global value chains, particularly in the fruit and vegetable market. Visits to users and producers of biocontrol agents are also foreseen.
