Semester spring semester 2020
Course frequency Every spring sem.

Content Diese Vorlesung wird von Dr. Marco Annoni angeboten: https://www.marcoannoni.com/.

The course focuses on placebo and nocebo effects, exploring their contemporary relevance in science and the humanities.

Understanding the multifaceted nature of the “placebo phenomenon”, in fact, provides a unique opportunity to observe how diverse disciplines – from cognitive neurosciences to medical ethics – are converging and reshaping our view of how “the mind” and “the world” interact with one another.

This course adopts an interdisciplinary perspective. We start by tracing the emergence of the placebo concept throughout the history of medicine and science, highlighting the diverse conceptual and epistemological shifts that have turned the placebo from an object of ridicule to a worthy target of empirical inquiry. Next, we delve into the current scientific literature in the field of placebo studies, analyzing its current assumptions, discoveries, key-questions and future directions. Then, we reconstruct the main coordinates of the present philosophical debate concerning the placebo and nocebo concepts, exploring the diverse alternatives that have been proposed and their significant implications in and outside the field of placebo studies. Finally, we turn to biomedical ethics, scrutinizing how placebo and nocebo effects can be ethically modulated in clinical and research settings.
