Content In this course, we will cover how to analyze non-numeric data. While the primary focus is on the analysis of textual data, most of the covered methods and techniques are also applicable to audio and visual data. Examples of data suitable for qualitative analysis include interview transcripts, focus group recordings, print media, archival documents, government reports, corporate annual non-financial reports, blogs, meeting notes, diaries, photo collections, and social media posts. The analytic techniques covered in this course are qualitative content analysis, thematic analysis, and content configuration analysis. Participants will work in groups on a small research project.
Learning objectives - Assess the suitability of specific research questions for qualitative content analysis, thematic analysis, and content configuration analysis.
- Set up and perform qualitative data analyses on different types of non-numeric data
- Understand the limits of qualitative data analysis
- Present qualitative research orally and in writing
Bibliography A course reader will be provided.
Comments The course is limited to sociology and political science students.
