Course Description:
This course introduces students to methods of qualitative research that are appropriate for research in the domain of bioethics. It will familiarise students with several facets of qualitative research. They will learn to design a study (including setting up selection, recruitment and informing potential research participants as well as fulfilling the ethical requirements of the study). They will learn to construct an interview guide. The students will receive training in interviewing with an emphasis on questioning techniques. Students will also be introduced to methods for analysing qualitative research data (e.g. Grounded Theory, Thematic Analysis, Narrative Analysis). Finally, the students will learn how to report results of qualitative data analyses.

Student competences after following this course are the following:
1. Familiar with qualitative research methods appropriate for studies in the field of bioethics.
2. Able to choose a suitable qualitative research method for a bioethics research question.
3. Capable of formulating a research proposal aimed at conducting a qualitative bioethics study.
4. Have knowledge of different analysis methods for qualitative research data.
5. Insight into the criteria for quality related to (reporting) qualitative research.
