56902-01 - Block course: Interdisciplinary Bioethics 2 CP (CANCELLED)

Semester spring semester 2020
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Tenzin Wangmo (tenzin.wangmo@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Although philosophical approaches have dominated bioethics, empirical bioethics is gaining momentum as it aids in better understand the complexities of real-life ethical dilemmas. Bioethics is becoming an interdisciplinary activity where we seek to integrate empirical social scientific analysis with ethical analysis to draw valuable normative conclusions. However, it is not at all clear how to combine two fundamentally different kinds of research activities – normative (philosophical work) and empirical (sociological, health sciences, nursing research). There is a risk of doing mainly empirical analysis without a meaningful integration of normative analysis. During this workshop we will seek to address the challenge of developing methodologies that help frame the process of combining empirical research with normative analysis and, at the same time, critically reflect on the limits of this integration process. This summer school is based on a SNSF project and will also draw on knowledge learned from it.
