57127-01 - Seminar: "Politics of the Womb": Maternal and Child Health in African History 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2020
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Julia Tischler (julia.tischler@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Our course examines the health, healthcare, and healing of women and children in twentieth century Africa. We look at different bodies of knowledge connected to health and wellbeing as well as respective interventions, focusing on biomedicine as much as “traditional” health. Furthermore, we study the practices of healers, doctors, and nurses and these experts’ complex relations to the people they sought to heal. The course also examines the ways in which women’s and children’s health was politicized, as questions of reproduction became an important arena of political struggle.
