57312-01 - Practical course: Read, Actually: Gothic Literature 3 CP

Content This Übung is a follow-up to Prof. Habermann's Survey of English lecture "Romantics and Victorians" and can be regarded as a companion to her "Fin-de-Siècle to the Present” lecture (19140-01) as well. However, there are no prerequisites to participate, and the course is open to all. Students are going to read, discuss and read aloud from a selection of both classic and more modern Gothic literature texts.
Learning objectives Close readings of crucial texts of Gothic literature, ranging from the beginnings in the late 18th century to its most modern reinterpretations in the new millennium.
Bibliography Participants are expected to acquire the following books for the course:

Horace Walpole, "The Castle of Otranto" (1764)
Mary Shelley, "Frankenstein" (1818)
Charlotte Perkins Gilman, "The Yellow Wallpaper" (1892)
Shirley Jackson, "The Haunting of Hill House" (1959)
Jeff VanderMeer, "Annihilation" (2014)
